Ready to get your "dance" on? Rockaway's first outdoor summertime contemporary dance performance series featuring the hottest young choreographers from New York City.
Drop by Rockaway Beach this weekend, Saturday, August 1st, from 4:00 pm-6:00 pm for the D.R.E.A.M. Ring Flexn--the event is on the sand at the beach & 81st St. and its totally FREE.
So what exactly is Flex? The foundation of FLEX is the bruk-up, which came out of Jamaican dancehall in the early 90s. Bruk-up means "broke up", and that means moving your body in all types of awkward ways, even the faces that we make. We dance from a place of the soul; it's emotion-based. It can be graceful, it can be aggressive, it can be anything the dancer wants it to be. Flexing has different styles, like connecting, pausing, gliding, getting low, bone-breaking. But flexing is more than just a dance, it's a culture. The way we talk, the way we speak, the way we dress.
